Preparation and testing artificial substrate

At the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, we have started an experiment to find optimal design of the constructed soil for use in the MOD4GRIN prototype.

The soil will provide plants the right amount of nutrients and water. We have combined a sandy soil with rockdust, a mature compost and other organic materials, and the performance will be evaluated by physical and chemical test and quantification of plant growth and quality. We test this with a broad range of plants with different requirements for soil nutrients and moisture. Species included are Potentilla argentea, Allium schoenoprasum, Petrosedum rupestre, Festuca pratensis, Festuca ovina, and Silene uniflora.
